Escape
In this, the twentieth book detailing the exploits of New York crime busters Butch Karp and his wife, Marlene Ciampi, the duo are each faced with challenges that have them facing "God-inspired" evils in events that play out on a national stage.
Jessica Campbell, a professor slash political activist out of NYU, has murdered her three children and, after her arrest, makes headlines by claiming God told her to "send her three children to Him." Butch Karp, the city's newly elected District Attorney, is committed to proving that the murder was just that, a cold blooded killing of three innocent children motivated by more malicious intentions.
In parallel, Marlene, a private detective that specializes in the support of abused women, finds herself facing off against an Islamic terrorist, The Sheik, who is planning on a jihadist uprising in the heart of New York City. The suicidal event he has in store would paralyze the nation's economy and inflict damage beyond even the disaster that was 9/11.
Tanenbaum has added new life to the Karp - Ciampi series (which has been getting a little stale in recent outings) by introducing a ragtag band of New York citizen crime fighters that assist in the protection of the city. An off-the-wall group, but they certainly believe in what they're doing and are strangely effective.
Tanenbaum, a master of tightly plotted tales, does an excellent job of weaving the two storylines together into a gripping saga.
