Shadow Of Power
Defense attorney Paul Madriani returns in Steve Martini's new thriller Shadow Of Power. Madriani and his partner Harry Hinds become embroiled in a political firestorm that threatens to crack the very foundation that this country was built upon.
The book centers on Terry Scarborough, the author of the best selling controversial book entitled Perpetual Slaves: The Branding of America´s Black Race. Scarborough's book is based on the premise that the roots of slavery were planted in 1787 and forever memorialized in the words of the Constitution. Later amendments abolishing the practice did not change the fact that the original terminology and all it's racist connotations still remained in the Constitution itself.
Scarborough, as publicity for his upcoming follow-up book, decides to announce on Jay Leno's Tonight Show that he is in possession of a letter written by Thomas Jefferson which will provide an even deeper and more disturbing insight into the racial tenets envisioned by the Founding Fathers. However, the night of the show, Scarborough is murdered in his hotel room in what appears to be a brutal hate crime. Madriani is hired to defend the young hotel worker who has been arrested and charged with the killing. As Madriani digs into the case, he discovers that despite the overwhelming evidence that points to his client's guilt, the truth may sit somewhere in between racial conspiracy and one man's ambition.
Madriani's search for the truth leads to a compelling courtroom showdown and proves, once again, that Martini is the master when it comes to trial drama twists and turns, some of which are more plausible than others. Despite the occasional leap of faith required, Martini has crafted a "can't put it down" thriller that touches on a side of our history that many would rather forget.
Highly recommended.
